Assistant/Associate Professor – Medical Microbiology Pathology Dept.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) seeks candidates for an open rank faculty position in the Academic Clinician Track at either the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level.  Applicants must have an MD or PhD or MD/PhD degree. For MD candidates, applicants must be board certified in clinical pathology (or AP/CP) and subspecialty certification by the American Board of Pathology (or eligible) or American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM). For PhD candidates, applicants must have board certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology (or eligible).

The Division of Laboratory Medicine at Department of Pathology at UIC provides testing in all major disciplines including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, transfusion medicine, tissue typing/transplant, cytogenetics and molecular pathology.  The Division’s expertise is shared not only with the UIC Medical Center, but with physicians and other medical facilities through the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System Reference Laboratory System.

Responsibilities of the applicant include a combination of clinical microbiology service and participation in teaching for medical students, residents, fellows, and house staff. The successful applicant will have experience in the field of clinical microbiology and one or more of its subspecialties. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in molecular diagnostics and specifically next generation sequencing technology for clinical diagnostics and metagenomics. Applicants must have strong leadership and interpersonal skills and willingness to work closely with other clinical services.

The applicant is expected to develop or continue his/her basic or translational research program. This faculty position provides opportunity for career growth and interaction with outstanding team of colleagues at the level of the department and institutions.

JOB FUNCTION/PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • PROVIDE PHD LEVEL TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO SUPERVISORS AND MANAGERS RESPONSIBLE FOR MICROBIOLOGY TESTING PROGRAM AND RELATED DEPARTMENTS.
  • COORDINATE, COMPILE, ANALYZE AND PRESENT ALL TECHNICAL VERIFICATIONS AND ASSAY/ INSTRUMENT VALIDATIONS FOR SECTIONS RELATED TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE.
  • WORK IN TANDEM WITH SECTION SUPERVISORS, MONITOR AND ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATORY AGENCIES (CAP, HRS, OSHA, AND CLIA) AND QUEST POLICY, PRACTICE, AND PROCEDURES.
  • PARTICIPATE IN IN-HOUSE CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM AND TAKE INDIRECT RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION OF TECHNICAL EMPLOYEES IN MICROBIOLOGY DEPARTMENT.
  • SERVE AS A CONSULTATIVE RESOURCE WITH EMPLOYEES ON QUALITY CONTROL/ QUALITY ASSURANCE MATTERS.
  • PROVIDE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS/ EVALUATION OF LABORATORY DATA INCLUDING: QUALITY CONTROL, PATIENT MEDIAN, INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE PRACTICES, PROFICIENCY RESULTS, PATIENT DISTRIBUTIONS FOR INTERNAL USE AND QUALITY ASSURANCE.
  • RESEARCH & PREPARE TECHNICAL LITERATURE FOR CLIENT USE, FOLLOWING TRADEMARK REQUIREMENTS, AS RELATED TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE.
  • POSSESS A DEMONSTRATED ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY UTILIZE BOTH QUEST AND EXTERNAL PEER CONTACTS TO NETWORK AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF SERVICE.
  • PROVIDE DAILY CUSTOMIZED MICROBIOLOGICAL REPORTS FOR SPECIFIC HOSPITAL SERVICES.
  • DEVELOP QUALITY MONITORS FOR TECHNICAL ASPECT OF PATIENT TESTING TO ENSURE ACCURATE, APPROPRIATE, AND TIMELY RESULTS AND TO IDENTIFY TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.
  • PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL/EPIDEMIOLOGY IN INVESTIGATING POTENTIAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE ISSUES.
  • PROVIDE EXPERT GUIDANCE ON TECHNICAL MATTERS RELATED TO DEPARTMENT’S TESTING SERVICE, WORKING CLOSELY WITH MEDICAL DIRECTOR TO PROVIDE CONSULTATION TO CLIENTS AND ASSURE APPROPRIATE TESTING IS UTILIZED.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATIONS:

PREREQUISITES

THE DIRECTOR TRAINEE MUST HAVE EARNED MD OR A PHD IN IMMUNOLOGY, GENETICS ON IN RELATED BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE FROM AN ACCREDITED INSTITUTION. IN ADDITION TO THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS, THE APPLICANT MUST HAVE AT LEAST 2 YEARS FULL-TIME POST-DOCTORAL LABORATORY TRAINING OR EXPERIENCE IN IMMUNOLOGY, HISTOCOMPATIBILITY, OR IMMUNOGENETICS, OR A RESIDENCY IN CLINICAL AND/OR ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY OR OTHER RELATED MEDICAL SPECIALTY OR HAVE AT LEAST 2 YEARS FULL-TIME POST-DOCTORAL TRAINING IN DIRECTING OR SUPERVISING HIGH COMPLEXITY TESTING IN HUMAN HISTOCOMPATIBILITY AND IMMUNOGENETICS IN AN ASHI-ACCREDITED OR APPROVED LABORATORY. THE UCLA IMMUNOGENETICS CENTER DIRECTOR TRAINEE PROGRAM

THE UCLA IMMUNOGENETICS CENTER DIRECTOR TRAINEE PROGRAM IS AN AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY AND IMMUNOGENETICS (ASHI) ACCREDITED HLA LABORATORY DIRECTOR PROGRAM. THIS FELLOWSHIP PROVIDES TWO YEARS OF FORMAL TRAINING FOR ONE CANDIDATE FUNDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY AND LABORATORY MEDICINE. DURING THIS TIME, THE FELLOW WILL WORK UNDER THE DIRECT GUIDANCE OF FOUR ASHI QUALIFIED DIRECTORS AND EXPERIENCED LABORATORY STAFF AT THE UCLA IMMUNOGENETICS CENTER. THE FELLOW WILL GAIN `HANDS ON’ EXPERIENCE AND PERFORM CLINICAL CASE REVIEWS. THE FELLOW WILL FURTHER CONDUCT RESEARCH WITHIN HISTOCOMPATIBILITY AND IMMUNOGENETICS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE DIRECTORS, RESEARCH SCIENTISTS, AND LABORATORY PERSONNEL. COMPLETION OF THIS POST-DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE THE TRAINEE WITH TWO YEARS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A QUALIFIED HISTOCOMPATIBILITY DIRECTOR UNDER CLIA/CMS, UNOS AND ASHI STANDARDS.
